Rising Basketball Star Jordan Woodson Takes the Spotlight as Times-Herald’s Athlete of the Week!

American Canyon High School sophomore Jordan Woodson has quickly become a standout player on the basketball court. Last year, as a freshman, she was the second-highest scorer for the Wolves, averaging 11.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Now in her sophomore year, Woodson continues to improve.

The Wolves currently have a 6-3 record in the Vine Valley Athletic League, winning three games last week. During this period, Woodson showcased her skills, averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Notable performances include a 22-point, 12-rebound effort in a victory against Sonoma Valley and a 15-point, 14-rebound outing against Casa Grande. She has been named the Times-Herald Athlete of the Week for her impressive contributions.

Woodson attributes her progress to a better understanding of the game in her second year on varsity. She feels more comfortable finding her shot and playing defense.

Coach Angela Davis commends Woodson’s development, highlighting her willingness to ask questions and improve her overall understanding of the game.

Despite her initial challenges transitioning to playing in the post, Woodson, who is 5-foot-7, has adapted and now navigates the space effectively.

She emphasizes that the recent success of the team is a collective effort with good team chemistry and a focus on supporting each other both on offense and defense.

Woodson’s favorite game from the past week was the win against Sonoma Valley, where the team avenged an earlier loss. She emphasizes the team’s commitment to studying opponents through film and working together to execute effective strategies.

Woodson acknowledges that her success results from the team’s collective effort and chemistry. Coach Davis sees great potential in Woodson’s game, noting her versatility in rebounding, running the fast break, and becoming a skilled free-throw shooter.

In addition to Woodson, other notable mentions for outstanding performances include Jazmine Cardwell, Tyra Fleming, Jeneyah Fowler, Anthony Monts, and Jose Valencia in various sports at different high schools.
